Agnostic

I woke up this morning thinking about this word. And what it actually means. Why someone would embrace this idea. Inigio Montoya comes to mind when he tells the little guy in Princess Bride, “I do not think that means whata you think it means.” Well, it does mean that you don’t believe, so maybe they do know that. But the definitions were more detailed than just that.

– one who believes nothing which cannot be demonstrated by the senses.

-an agnostic embraces a worldview in which the existence of deity is unknown or unknowable. Derives from the Greek agnostos, a = without, gnostos = known or knowledge. …

Someone who claims that they do not know or are unable to know whether God exists.

someone who is doubtful or noncommittal about something.

a person who claims that they cannot have true knowledge about the existence of God (but does not deny that God might exist)

So, it means they just don’t know-yet.

This scripture comes to mind..

Act 19:2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

They just didn’t know -yet.

Bro Hemphill said, we should be carrying our swords on our belts, not as a hidden dagger. Let it be seen! Bro Urbano this weekend gave a twist to the word ‘peculiar’ that it doesn’t mean just different it means rare. People that operate in love are a rare gem in this world and will be noticed. But they need to HEAR it, to FEEL it. Loving your brother means absolutely nothing unless you get that love TO your brother.

Once Jesus gives purpose to your pain you have a new life! He can use it for good. THEN the suffering will make sense. Instead of being cynical about life, (another princess Bride quote coming on..’Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.’) you can rejoice in your sufferings. You can learn to live a life of forgiveness! Reconciling your past and moving on. You don’t have to be stuck in unbelief anymore. When Jesus makes Himself real to you, EVERYTHING changes. Your entire perspective about this life changes.

I guess todays entry in my gratitude journal would be simple. Thank you, Lord for making yourself real to me. Help me to be someone who can pass on that love to someone, to let them see your love through me. This is my desire.

Nice Princess Bride reference. I was a little disappointed you didn’t work “As you wish” or the ROUSes in there…
The Lord has been dealing with me about the some of the same things. Especially on the love part. It reminds me of a Twain quote, “The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can’t read them.” If we have an understanding of love and do not love then we do not value the love of our Savior. It is our call to love if we don’t answer this call we are denying Christ.

Travis, I’m sure I could have worked in a few Rodents of Unusual Size’s in there somewhere.. 🙂 I was convicted as i read the definition “someone who is doubtful or noncommittal about something” that I could be a practicing agnostic. If we don’t live it, we are just like those who don’t know it. That is a sobering thought. Thanks for the comment, especially that great quote.

Makes me think of a song – “It’s my desire to serve your kingdom Lord, take the open door, and live for You. It’s my desire to be Your feet and hands, to offer all I am for all that You can do …”

When you serve and minister to others, you DO put flesh and blood to God in another’s life. Another way God is intertwined with His people.

Love Wins. the only thing I’d add to that quote, “love wins” is… the word, “period” .
Love is what lifts when nothing else can. Love is what draws people to us, Love of God, love of children, love of spouses, love of friends, grandchildren, family, dear friends. Love wins.
period. “The greatest of these is love”. and you are so right, if we don’t show love and live it, it’s like those who dont’ know . With genuine love too, God’s love with in us, contentment is there also.
    I love you

Good post, Sarah. I needed to hear it. I have been struggling lately wondering what’s the use in getting the love to others when it seems that they could care less. But our duty is still the same, regardless of the cost or the outcome. Thanks for the reminder.
